Wordtracker

Keyword research is essential if you want to rank high in search engine results pages (SERPs). Organic traffic can easily turn into paying customers once you start, too. Don’t you want customers finding you without any extra effort? In fact, SEO offers one of the best reward-to-effort ratios among inbound marketing strategies.

However, many businesses still don’t optimize their websites for search engines. Don’t be one of them. Today, I’m sharing an honest review of the keyword research tool Wordtracker and showing you how to use it effectively. Let’s dive in!

What is Wordtracker

Wordtracker is a free keyword research tool that helps marketers find search terms to boost traffic and rankings. It also offers competitive analysis, allowing you to see which keywords your competitors use. This feature opens up more opportunities for you to rank higher. Keywords and content go hand-in-hand, so Wordtracker also serves as a content marketing tool. Use the search engine data and suggestions as inspiration for new blog posts, videos, or other content forms.

A unique feature of Wordtracker is that it displays not only Google search data but also data from YouTube and Amazon. This is perfect if you create videos to grow your business or sell products on Amazon.

How to Use Wordtracker

Using Wordtracker is simple. Start by entering a search term on the homepage and clicking the red button. This takes you to the results page, where Wordtracker shows keyword suggestions along with their metrics.

On the left sidebar, you’ll find keyword recommendations. Use these as ideas for other terms you can target. Click the plus symbol beside any suggestion to add it to your list. You’ll see the volume, CPC, and competition level for each keyword.

I recommend targeting a mix of low, medium, and high competition keywords. This strategy helps you grab easy wins to boost your Google trust, drive traffic, and stay competitive for larger terms as you build authority.

If you want to download the results, click the export button to save them as a CSV file. You can then upload this file to another software or platform. You can also filter keyword results using included and excluded terms on the right side. Enter a specific word or phrase in the first box to include it, and use the second box to exclude exact words, similar to Google Ads negative keywords.

At the top left, you can switch between platforms like Google, Amazon, YouTube, and eBay, depending on where you want to use the keywords. You can also change the country and state settings on the right side.

To research competitors, go to the “Inspect” page in the top navigation. Enter a competitor’s URL to begin. Wordtracker will provide insights such as:

  • Title Tag: See if they target specific keywords or use certain copy techniques.
  • Meta Description: Check the length and any unique strategies like calls to action.
  • Headings: Analyze how they use headings for content and keyword ideas.
  • Citation Flow: Measure the number and strength of their backlinks.
  • Trust Flow: Assess the trustworthiness of their backlinks.
  • Page Speed: Compare your website’s speed with competitors for better user experience and SEO.
  • Optimization: Get a score rating their overall SEO optimization.
  • Difficulty: Understand how hard it will be to outrank their domain.

A preview of the competitor’s website appears on the right, and all their keywords are listed below.

Wordtracker Pricing

Wordtracker offers both free and paid versions. The free version provides basic data from Google, Bing, and YouTube, which is great for beginners. The paid version unlocks data from over ten websites, including Amazon and eBay. This extended access is valuable for those selling on multiple platforms or creating diverse content. The pricing is affordable, making it accessible for small business owners and individual marketers.

Wordtracker Scout

Wordtracker Scout is an additional feature that enhances keyword research. It allows you to analyze competitors’ pages based on your target search terms. You can see which keywords they use, including variations and alternatives. This insight helps you refine your own keyword strategy to better compete in the market.

Final Thoughts on Wordtracker

Wordtracker is a fantastic freemium tool for digital marketers. Its user interface is clean and easy to navigate, making it accessible even for those new to SEO. Unlike other tools that take days to learn, Wordtracker is straightforward. You can quickly start improving your SEO with it.

I find Wordtracker very useful for generating new search terms and content ideas while gaining inspiration from competitors. The ability to export data and access keyword metrics across multiple platforms adds significant value. The tool is also affordable, with options to scale as your needs grow.

Pros:

  • User-Friendly Interface: Easy to install and navigate.
  • Affordable Pricing: Cost-effective compared to other SEO tools.
  • Wide Platform Compatibility: Works with Google, YouTube, Amazon, Etsy, and more.
  • Essential Keyword Metrics: Provides search volume, CPC, and competition data.
  • Data Export Capability: Export keyword data to CSV files.
  • Cross-Device Access: Use your API key on multiple devices.

Cons:

  • Limited to Keyword Research: Doesn’t offer comprehensive SEO features like traffic analysis or backlink tracking.
  • Potential for Accidental Credit Usage: The extension remains active, which can lead to unintended credit use during regular searches.

Overall, Wordtracker is an excellent tool for anyone starting with SEO or managing small-scale online businesses. Its simplicity, affordability, and broad platform compatibility make it a top choice for effective keyword research. While it may lack some advanced features found in higher-end SEO platforms, it provides all the essential data needed to improve your website’s ranking.
